Lyrics

The Firefly and the Cigarette
by Christopher Cook

I was ridin’ on the bus
And the windows they were rattlin’
There was a man shakin’ hands, he was runnin’ for mayor
He said he just thought he’d throw his hat in

There was a mother with two kids
And the youngest, he was tattlin’
There was a man up front with a bottle in a paper bag
Oh ... the devil he was battlin’

A big woman got on
She was gonna need some room
The man with the bottle scooted over
He thought he might tell her of his doom

He said “I truly believe God doesn’t love me anymore.”
She said “Of course he does, that’s what you get for keepin’ score.”

I knew a girl who grew up in the woods
Somewhere in Louisiana
Her mother was pixilated
And her father lived in Savannah

Every year she enrolled in school
But she never went as a habit
And when she was twelve years old
She baptized her rabbit

Her father came to visit
They took a walk and he matched her pace
Under a live oak tree he confessed to her
Even though he was afraid of her grace

He said “I truly believe God doesn’t love me anymore.”
She said “Of course he does, that’s what you get for keepin’ score.”

Up north they take great joy
In pilin’ up all that snow
While lizards crawl across the wall
Down in Mexico

On the porch, the fireflies
Gather ‘round the glow of your cigarette
Sittin’ out in the evenin’ time
‘Cause the house ain’t cooled off yet
Oh ... light, I’m gone away
Oh light, I’m gone away
